Melody Belle was the second cheapest of the 17 thoroughbreds on which David Ellis spent a total of nearly NZ$5 million at the 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale, but her price did not stop her from becoming a record breaker.
The NZ$57,500 daughter of Commands and Meleka Belle raced past Kiwi great Sunline when she won the Bonecrusher NZ Stakes, her 14th victory at the top level. Now only Winx (25), John Henry (16) and Black Caviar (15) have won more Group One races than Melody Belle in the Group One era.
Troy Harris rode Melody Belle for the fourth time, and now the jockey is four from four aboard the mighty mare, all four of their associations resulting in Group One wins.
