Michael Grantham achieved the very rare feat of training a thoroughbred racing winner and driving a standardbred racing winner on the same day when Doctor Tom was victorious at Bunbury nine hours after Hip Wiggle triumphed at Belmont.
Saturday’s Bunbury meeting was the third harness racing event to which Grantham had turned up after saddling a successful galloper earlier that day. Grantham arrived at Northam on Saturday 6 February and Bunbury on Saturday 10 April hoping to complete a cross-code double, but he fell short on both occasions, going closest at Bunbury when his equine partner, Pinny Tiger, placed second at long odds. But it was third time lucky for Grantham as Hip Wiggle’s trainer drove Doctor Tom to victory, although it is worth noting the Michael Brennan-prepared pacer did start at odds of 1-25.
Grantham, who was a promising jockey before weight issues forced him out of the saddle, has trained nine thoroughbred racing winners and driven 508 standardbred racing winners.
