KIWI BREDS TRIFECTA AUSSIE DERBY FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1992

New Zealand-bred gallopers trifectaed the Bentley Australian Derby for the first time since 1992 when Explosive Jack, Young Werther and Lion’s Roar finished this year’s edition of the Group One race first, second and third, respectively.

Thoroughbreds reared in New Zealand have won 23 of the 43 runnings of the Australian Derby in the Group One era, but not since Naturalism, Veandercross and Cavallieri crossed the Randwick finish line in that order 29 years ago had Kiwi-bred gallopers filled all three medal positions.

Explosive Jack (NZ$100,000 to Moody Racing), Young Werther (NZ$140,000 to Aquis Farm/O’Brien Thoroughbreds) and Lion’s Roar (NZ$65,000 to Champion Thoroughbreds) all graduated from the 2019 New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale.
