If either Harlem or Fifty Stars wins the Australian Cup at Flemington, Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig will join Chris Waller and Gai Waterhouse as trainers who have won the same Australian Group One race four years in a row this century.
Ben Hayes and Dabernig were in a training partnership with David Hayes when Harlem (2018 and 2019) and Fifty Stars (2020) won editions of the Australian Cup, a Group One contest that dates back to 1863. Harlem was a despised outsider in both 2018 (60-1) and 2019 (30-1), whereas 2021 ante-post favourite Fifty Stars jumped at 6-1 in 2020.
The phenomenon that is Waller has won four straight runnings of several Australian Group One events since the turn of the century, and the trainer who will be associated with Winx forever saddled each winner of the George Main Stakes at Randwick from 2014 to 2018 inclusive – Sacred Falls (2014), Kermadec (2015) and Winx (2016, 2017 and 2018). Waterhouse prepared Desert War (2007), Tuesday Joy (2008) and Theseo (2009 and 2010) to Ranvet Stakes successes at Rosehill.
