OH MOTHER, URBAN SEA WAS A MARVELLOUS MUM

As Australia marks Mother’s Day, is there any doubt Urban Sea, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner which produced four Group One champions, including super sires Frankel and Sea The Stars, is the greatest mum of gallopers ever?

The likes of Cosquilla, Fairy Bridge, Fall Aspen, Hasili, Height Of Fashion, La Troienne and Plucky Liege each have their advocates within the thoroughbred racing fraternity, but it is hard to look past Urban Sea, which won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 1993 before giving birth to four Group One champions: Galileo in 1998, Black Sam Bellamy in 1999, My Typhoon in 2002 and Sea The Stars in 2006. Urban Sea is one of 10 mares to produce two English Derby winners, and 2001 Epsom hero Galileo went on to father Timeform’s highest-rated galloper, unbeaten legend Frankel.

The daughter of Miswaki and Allegretta, Urban Sea entered the world at Denali Stud in Kentucky before David Tsui paid 280,000 French francs for the Marystead Farm-bred yearling. Urban Sea won eight of her 23 races, including the 1993 edition of Europe’s most prestigious thoroughbred racing event, before retiring to the breeding barn and producing several star thoroughbreds prior to her death in 2009.
