Jason Miller became not only a Strickland Stakes-winning jockey, owner and trainer when Naughty By Nature won the Breast Cancer Research Centre of WA-Strickland Stakes at Belmont but also a Group-winning trainer in his own right.
The Strickland Stakes at Group Three level is a special race to Miller, who rode 2004 winner Dedicated Miss, part-owned 2012 winner Kincaple and trained 2021 winner Naughty By Nature, his stable star which he purchased for $26,000 during the 2018 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.
Miller has trained gallopers under his own name in nine of the last 10 seasons, the odd one out being the 2016-2017 campaign in which he teamed up with Geoff Durrant during Adam Durrant’s sabbatical from thoroughbred racing. Geoff Durrant prepared Dedicated Miss to take out the 2004 Strickland Stakes, and Adam Durrant was the person who conditioned 2012 Strickland Stakes champion Kincaple. Geoff Durrant and Miller experienced plenty of success during their training partnership, the highlight of which was Star Exhibit’s first Perth Cup victory on New Year’s Eve 2016.
