Ascot trainer Bob Turrell could be forgiven for not knowing when he last won a race at his home track because 2,233 days separated the victories of Terkel in 2014 and his latest winner, Alien From Mars, on GA Towton Cup Day in 2020.
Turrell, whose nicknames include Bobby Waller because he has put a roof over the head of numerous Chris Waller-prepared visitors to Ascot, has raced seven gallopers out of Soviet Lad mare Salavat, including Terkel, Alien From Mars and Rikki Tikki Tavi, the latter of which was responsible for the veteran trainer’s previous victory, at Belmont in 2015.
Alien From Mars, which had filled minor placings in three of his first eight races before breaking through on his ninth appearance, is one of just two thoroughbreds which Turrell has in work. Godolphin-bred gelding Katona, which carried the global operation’s royal blue colours to success in a Kembla Grange maiden last year, is Turrell’s other galloper.
